Ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation (generally defined as the 200-400 nm and 100-200 nm wavelength regions, respectively) is able to initiate photochemical reactions that are inaccessible to optical sources emitting radiation of longer wavelengths. A problem is producing these wavelengths from cold sources.
